INCIMAT carried out a structural modeling and failure scenario reconstruction study of an existing masonry bridge, with the objective of analyzing the mechanisms that may have led to the partial collapse of specific load-bearing elements.
The scope of work included the collection and review of available information, the inspection of observed damage, the geometric assessment of the structure, and the identification of the critical elements involved in the failure process, with particular attention given to the behavior of piers, vaults, parapets, and support areas.
Using advanced structural models, the overall stability of the bridge was evaluated, together with the redistribution of internal forces and the potential progressive loss of load-bearing capacity associated with deterioration, displacement, or local failure of vertical supporting elements.
The study enabled the reconstruction of different failure hypotheses, the assessment of the influence of the acting loads and environmental conditions, and the evaluation of the most probable collapse sequence, providing a solid technical basis for interpreting the observed damage and supporting subsequent decision-making processes.
The result was a forensic engineering assessment aimed at understanding the structural behavior of the bridge, identifying the critical failure mechanisms involved, and providing technical criteria for future conservation, repair, strengthening, or stabilization interventions.
