INCIMAT carried out a technical investigation aimed at determining the causes of the collapse of a vaulted roof belonging to a historic building, analyzing both the pre-existing condition of the structure and the mechanisms that ultimately led to failure.
The scope of work included the collection and review of available documentation, the inspection of observed damage, the geometric survey of the structure, and the characterization of the original construction materials and structural systems.
Using advanced structural models, the load-bearing behavior of the roof was reproduced and analyzed, assessing the influence of gravity loads, accumulated deformations, potential deterioration processes, construction modifications introduced throughout the building’s service life, and the progressive evolution of the stress state within the structural elements.
The study enabled the reconstruction of different failure hypotheses and the assessment of the most probable sequence of events leading to the collapse, identifying the critical components involved and the structural mechanisms that contributed to the loss of overall stability.
The results provided a solid technical basis for the interpretation of the incident, the definition of intervention criteria, and the planning of future stabilization, rehabilitation, or reconstruction works for the historic building.
