INCIMAT developed the design of a reinforcement system using carbon fiber composite materials for a reinforced concrete structure requiring an increase in load-bearing capacity and an extension of its service life, without significantly affecting its geometry or existing operating conditions.
The scope of work included the inspection and assessment of the structure, the characterization of existing materials, and the analysis of the factors leading to the need for strengthening, such as increased loading demands, changes of use, structural deterioration, or compliance with updated regulatory requirements.
Using advanced structural analysis models, the behavior of the structural elements was evaluated, and the areas requiring carbon fiber reinforcement systems were identified. The reinforcement layout was optimized to improve flexural capacity, shear resistance, or confinement performance according to the specific requirements of the project.
During the development of the study, applicable limit states were verified, compatibility between the existing materials and the reinforcement systems was assessed, and installation procedures were defined to ensure proper load transfer between the concrete substrate and the composite materials.
The result was a lightweight, efficient, and minimally invasive strengthening solution capable of enhancing the structural performance of the facility while maintaining its functionality and minimizing intervention time.
