CFD Simulation of Airflow in Operating Rooms

INCIMAT carried out an advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to analyze airflow behavior within operating rooms, evaluating the effectiveness of ventilation, air supply, and extraction systems in a highly demanding healthcare environment.

The scope of work included the three-dimensional modeling of the operating room, considering the room geometry, the arrangement of supply diffusers, return grilles, medical equipment, surgical lighting systems, operating tables, and occupants.

Using CFD simulations, airflow patterns, velocity distributions, recirculation zones, contaminant removal mechanisms, and the influence of the ventilation system on indoor environmental quality were analyzed in detail.

The study enabled the identification of potential critical areas, the optimization of supply and return air locations, and the verification of HVAC system performance under representative operating conditions.

The results provided a solid technical basis for improving the environmental safety of the operating room, promoting appropriate comfort conditions, and supporting the reliable operation of healthcare facilities and their critical systems.
